Shi Guorui (b. 1964, Shanxi Province) has mastered the camera obscura technique and is one of China’s foremost photographers. The surreal vision of his distinctive obscura images removes all activity from the image extracting the essence of his subjects, mainly landscapes and monuments, which are also sites of conflict and cultural significance. In recent years, he has traveled extensively between the US and China to document the sites of urban development and monuments that symbolize cultural, political and economic authority. His works collectively document a contemporary dialogue about the varied influences on China’s rapidly evolving global society.

L&M Arts is proud to present Rebirth, July 15 to September 2, our first exhibition of unique camera obscura photographs by Shi Guorui. Shi is one of China’s foremost photographers and his work is frequently exhibited in international museums and institutions, including The de Young Museum, San Francisco; Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Royal Ontario Museum, Canada; Groninger Museum, The Netherlands; and the National Art Museum of China, Beijing. This is Shi’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles and we are honored to represent him internationally. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue with an essay by Britta Erickson, noted scholar and lecturer in the field of contemporary Chinese art. It is the first complete monograph of the artist’s camera obscura works from 2001 through 2011.

Shi was born in China in 1964 and currently lives and works in Beijing. In 1990, Shi was given the opportunity to study fine arts at Nanjing Normal University.  In 1992, he graduated from the Photography department and earnestly began his career as an artist. In 1998, Shi experienced a life-changing accident, a moment, in retrospect, that propelled him to exclusively employ the camera obscura technique. Camera obscura captures a series of moments, rather than just an instant, and removes all ephemeral activity from the resulting image. The surreal vision of Shi’s camera obscura photographs distills the enduring essence of his subjects; the medium itself is a metaphor for the artist’s own outlook on life and his work. .

While Shi’s use of the camera obscura is deeply personal, Rebirth’s subject matter documents an expansive contemporary dialogue about the relationships of an evolving global society. The current show highlights a new collection of photographs of urban sites in the US and China that contrasts themes of American economic hegemony and globalization with China’s aspiring development and the architectural language of power, whether over nature, man, or physical space. With these works, Shi alludes to the American Dream as it exists in America and as it is conveyed and interpreted in China.  Each image is also documented in a specific period of current conflict or historic significance. Against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving modern society in China and within the context of an increasingly complex global community, Shi’s works visually examine the structures that symbolize cultural, political and economicauthority in our present time.

Think about human activity in the long-term, in infinite space and time; indeed how brief, bleak, and fragile it all is…

Time and space are sacred realities. I am continually intrigued by the things that influence people and society to develop—by what allows life to go on. Camera obscura, this primitive image making method, is a fitting way for me to express myself and depict my version of reality. In my images, the material existence of an immediate reality seem to be real, yet fade out and disappear with an illusory quality—just as a landmark building may outlive our time and influence a future existence.

By means of depicting the connection of time and space, placing them in a constantly restless material world of history, reality and future, we question, reflect, and meditate…
