UCCA STATEMENT
- regarding the recent announcement by Sotheby‘s Hong Kong about the April 2011 auction of works from the Guy & Myriam Ullens Foundation Collection:
February 14th, 2011, Beijing, China
The Ullens Foundation and UCCA are separate organizations. The sale and/or display of the works in the Foundation Collection will have no effect on the day-to-day operations or long-term goals of UCCA.
The Guy and Myriam Ullens Foundation Collection is like a living organism: it breathes, changes and grows. The Ullens have chosen to sell a number of selected works, but they will also continue to acquire new works from an even younger generation of artists.
Since opening in 2007, UCCA has succeeded in becoming a widely-admired and emulated center for the contemporary arts in China, earning praise from the art and academic community and the general public alike.
Guy Ullens established UCCA in China in order to give something back to the country and the people who had given him so much, and to share his passion and appreciation for contemporary Chinese art with art lovers in China and all over the world.
Mr. Ullens‘ intention was always to create an art center that would be the "crowning jewel" of contemporary Chinese art and would eventually evolve into a fully Chinese-managed organization. Over the years, UCCA has made great progress in this direction, taking positive steps to establish a healthy and sustainable operating model; by 2009, all of the major department heads were qualified Chinese experts. Today, the process of setting up a board of trustees was already in motion.
In the coming years, UCCA will continue to develop, evolve and achieve. UCCA remains committed to bringing the public the highest-quality exhibitions of Chinese and global contemporary art, promoting contemporary cultural understanding, and serving as a bridge between China and the world.
About UCCA
The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) is a non-profit, comprehensive art center founded by collectors Guy and Myriam Ullens in November 2007. UCCA presents exhibitions of established and emerging artists and develops a trusted platform to share knowledge through education and research.
